Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity Pursues its Surgical Actions Backed by Foundation’s Connected Mobile Medical Units Program

As part of its medical-humanitarian activities during the month of Ramadan, the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity is organizing, on March 20-30, a major cataract surgery campaign, benefiting people living in disaster-stricken douars (small villages) in the provinces of Al Haouz and Chichaoua.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with local authorities, the Regional Health and Social Protection Department and the AMMS (Moroccan Medical Association of Solidarity), is designed to provide surgical treatment for cataract cases detected by the UMMC-FMVS operating in the provinces of Al Haouz and Chichaoua.

It will benefit a total of three hundred (300) patients from the douars of Chichaoua and Amizmiz, areas severely affected by the Al Haouz earthquake, according to a Foundation press release issued on Friday.

The intervention program is being implemented in two stages, each lasting three days, with each stage including surgical operations and post-operative monitoring. The first phase runs from March
22 to 24 at Amizmiz center, on the UMMC-FMVS site. One hundred and fifty (150) surgical procedures are scheduled. The second phase will run from March 28 to 30 at the UMMC-FMVS site in the douar of Mzouda, 48 kilometers from Chichaoua.

In addition to the technical resources of the UMMC-FMVS, considerable resources have been mobilized to ensure that the campaign runs smoothly, and that the best possible conditions are in place to welcome and care for the local population. Specific areas for high-quality, safe pre-operative preparation (ECG and measurement of vital signs) have been set up close to the UMMC-FMVS, adds the same source.

Four mobile units, including two ophthalmic surgery platforms (4 operating theatres) supplied by AMMS, are deployed in the field. Lastly, a team of 34 people, including the Foundation’s managers, social workers and technicians, as well as the association’s surgeons (10) and paramedical staff, are taking part in the campaign.

As a reminder, the aim of the surgical campaigns progr
ammed as part of the UMMC-FMVS program is to facilitate access for rural populations to specialized surgical services, by complementing the general medical and tele-expertise services provided by the UMMC-FMVS. The first such campaign, carried out in early March in the provinces of Sefrou and Boulemane, treated 130 patients from the localities of Tachot Amlal, Ait Khabach, Tassa and neighboring douars, concludes the press release.
