Bahrain concludes participation in 76th WHA session

The World Health Assembly (WHA) main committee has today convened for its final session in Geneva, Switzerland.

Health Minister Dr. Jaleela bint Al Sayyed Hasan Jawad chaired the panel which deals with important technical issues such as health systems, universal health coverage, and emergency preparedness and response.

Addressing the session, she noted the important discussions which were held during the 76th WHA session on May 21-30, focusing on future health challenges.

She extended thanks and gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister for their unwavering support to the health sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The minister commended regional directors and the WHO team, head by director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, for their continuous support

She commended the efforts made by Ambassador Dr. Yousef Abdul Karim Bucheeri, Director General for Legal Affairs and Human Rights, and for the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in Geneva and the accompanying delegation.

SPC member inaugurates Yemen Exhibition for Medicines, Devices, Medical Supplies

Supreme Political Council Mohammed al-Nuaimi on Tuesday inaugurated Yemen Exhibition for Medicines, Devices and Medical Supplies 2023.

Al-Nuaimi and other State’s officials briefed on the contents of the exhibition, which includes medicines, devices, and medical supplies for a number of companies.

They listened from the exhibition organizers an explanation of the components of the exhibition.

Ministry of Public Health and Population, in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry, the General Authority for Investment, the Supreme Authority for Medicines and the Chamber of Commerce organized a forum for investment opportunities in the field of medical and pharmaceutical industries, “Investing in pharmaceutical manufacturing…opportunities and challenges”.

The forum reviewed axes on the prospects for local manufacturing in light of the national vision and the national strategy for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The axes of the forum included investment in the field of pharmaceutical manufacturing, promising opportunities, facilities, incentives and challenges, presenting regional and global models and experiences in the localization of technology and quality standards in the pharmaceutical industry, in addition to requirements and facilities to encourage national capital, standards and requirements for good pharmaceutical manufacturing, partnership relations and integration between the importer and the manufacturer.

Al-Nunaim pointed out that there is a will to face challenges to build and advance the country in various fields, including the health and pharmaceutical sectors.

He called on the national capital to exploit investment opportunities and benefit from natural materials, rocks and medicinal herbs in the pharmaceutical industry, pointing out that the government’s approval of draft amendments to income tax laws, sales tax and customs comes in order to protect the local product from import in various sectors.

For his part, Minister of Public Health and Population Taha al-Mutawakil affirmed that Yemen is promising and still needs many factories and investment in this vital and important sector.

Al-Mutawakil considered the Council of Ministers’ approval of draft amendments to income tax laws, sales tax and customs an important step to prepare investment and protect the local product in various fields.

He urged the participants in the forum to come up with a vision and practical steps that contribute to the localization of the local industry in Yemen, indicating that the Ministry has approved 62 types of medicines that are manufactured locally on the way to localization of a thousand brands in the coming years.

Minister al-Mutawakil said that the contractual regulation was approved to organize local manufacturing and open the way for importers to manufacture imported items in local factories, in coordination with international companies, according to the necessary standards and controls for good manufacturing and quality standards.

The Retinal Surgery Team at the Eye Hospital in Tripoli, after a successful surgery, restored sight to a child who was blind in his left eye.

The hospital administration stated that the distinguished team, with the participation of the visiting Ukrainian doctor, restored the sight of the child, after a complex surgery.

The hospital administration thanked all the team participating in the treatment localization program this week, whose number exceeds 150 employees who continue day and night to serve the patient.

HEC Paris, WCM-Qatar Join Forces to Host ‘Leading Change in Healthcare’ Session

HEC Paris in Qatar and Weill Cornell-Medicine Qatar, both partner universities of Qatar Foundation, hosted a panel discussion on ‘Leading Change in Healthcare: Strategies for effective healthcare management in an ever-changing policy landscape’, which explored the latest trends and innovations in healthcare management and policy, and provided attendees with key insights for succeeding in this rapidly changing industry.

The panel brought together healthcare industry leaders, representing a range of disciplines from surgical consultants, to dementia-care, academics, and disease control researchers.

“The healthcare sector is being disrupted across the entire delivery landscape and demands new strategies to address increasing patient expectations, the emergence of personalized healthcare and stricter regulatory standards.”, explained Dean of HEC Paris in Qatar Dr. Pablo Martin de Holan.

“Through our collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine, we are committed to ensuring that Qatar’s healthcare sector upholds its reputation for excellence and effectively fulfills the ambitious goals set forth in the Qatar National Vision 2030,” he added.

For his part, Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar Dr. Javaid Sheikh commented: “Widespread change is needed to address the evolution of the sector, utilizing technology, fresh design processes and new financial and logistics models to deliver productivity improvements, financial and talent sustainability and regulatory compliance while driving value-based care. We are proud to have partnered with HEC Paris in Qatar to bring together experts from different sectors to share their knowledge and perspectives and we look forward to delivering further panel discussions to ensure Qatar’s healthcare sector remains an outstanding case study of performance and societal excellence.” Last year, HEC Paris in Qatar and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar initiated a collaborative effort by launching an Executive Certificate in Healthcare Management and Policy. Building upon this success, the second edition of the program is scheduled to commence in November of this year. The primary objective of this program is to enhance systems-level management expertise and expedite positive patient outcomes in Qatar and the broader region.

The program consists of two one-week modules; one in New York, led by Weill Cornell, and one in Doha, led by HEC Paris. This collaboration clearly demonstrates the value that cooperation between partner universities brings to the community, which forms a core element of the Qatar Foundation multiversity strategy.

The panel discussion concluded with a lively question and answer session that demonstrated the commitment of Qatar’s healthcare professionals to leading and managing the transformation taking place in the sector.

Health Minister congratulates NHRA’s CEO for winning top WHO award

Health Minister, Dr. Jaleela bint Al-Sayed Jawad Hassan, has congratulated the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA), Dr. Mariam Adhbi Al-Jalahma, on being granted the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, presented the award to Dr. Al-Jalahma during a ceremony held today on the sidelines of the 76th World Health Assembly, in the presence of the WHA President, health ministers and heads of delegations.

The Minister of Health affirmed that Dr. Al-Jalahma’s success in winning the high-level award was in recognition of her efforts in the field of health promotion over the past 30 years.

She expressed Bahrain’s pride in its distinguished national competencies who are exerting pioneering efforts in various fields, particularly health.

Established in 2019, the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion is awarded to person (s) or institution(s), governmental or non-governmental organisations or organizations, who have made a significant contribution to health promotion that extend far beyond the call of normal duties.

Minister of Health Meets Iranian Counterpart in Geneva

Minister of Health Fahad bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel has met with the Iranian Minister of Health, Bahram AynAllah, on the sidelines of the 76th session of the World Health Assembly, held under the theme “WHO at 75: saving lives, driving health for all”, at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, during the period May 21-30.

During the meeting, they discussed the health situation in both countries and ways to strengthen cooperation in health.

The two sides concluded the meeting with an agreement to form technical teams from each side to discuss areas of health cooperation, especially in the field of public health, health research and mass gathering medicine.
