Nova Agency: The Italian Foreign Minister visits Egypt – fighting migration and the Libyan crisis are at the top of his agenda.

Rome, The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tayani, will begin today, Saturday, a visit to Egypt to meet with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, according to the Italian News Agency (Nova).

The agency quoted unnamed sources as saying that the agenda of the “Tayani” talks is topped by issues related to cooperation in illegal immigration issues, and regional challenges, including Libya, the peace process in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and their implications for food safety.

It is scheduled that “Tayani” will touch during his visit to Cairo, which – comes in the context of a series of visits that led him last week to Turkey and Tunisia, to address the issue of illegal immigration, and to achieve stability in Libya – as well as bilateral cooperation at the general level and in the energy sector in particular.

According to the same source, Tayani’s visit to Egypt came about two months after the arrival of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to Italy within the framework of his participation in the “Mediterranean Dialogues” conference organized in Rome last December, and it also comes after more than three months of the meeting between the Prime Minister Italian Giorgia Meloni and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the 27th United Nations Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh last November, where the two sides discussed the case of Giulio Regeni, the Libyan crisis, the fight against illegal immigration, respect for human rights, energy supplies, renewable energy sources, the climate crisis and security at the Mediterranean sea.

In its report on the visit, Nova touched on what Tayani said during his return from Ankara last week that the Italian government is working on an agreement with the countries of origin and with the most important countries through which migration flows pass and also to achieve stability in Libya, explaining that “Egypt and Turkey Two big countries have influence in Libya and they are transit countries, so they have immigration problems and we need to find a common solution”.

In this context, the Italian Agency pointed out that stability in Libya appears to be linked to the phenomenon of illegal immigration, and that the role of Egypt and Turkey, which respectively support authorities in the east and west of the country, is “fundamental,” as Tayani stressed that Cairo and Ankara’s commitment “to achieving stability in Libya”, preferring elections is essential.

Nova quoted the Italian minister as saying, in an interview with the Italian television network, “Al-Rai News,” “We must ensure that an electoral solution is reached in Libya, but this can be achieved by agreement between the parties involved. Egypt and Turkey are two parties involved, like Italy, if we solve the problem of Libya.” We will solve the problems of illegal immigration and energy.”

(Nova) pointed out that on the eve of his trip to Cairo, the Italian Foreign Minister spoke about the case of the murder of Giulio Regeni, which took place in Egypt in 2016, saying: “What happened to Giulio Regeni is very dangerous and we always remind the Egyptian authorities of it,” but it is necessary to maintain relations open for the stability of the Mediterranean.
