Greece is looking to demarcate maritime border with Libya, Turkish expert warns

Athens-Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias announced during a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Abdullah Bou Habib, after their meeting in Athens, that his country is looking forward to demarcating the borders of the economic zones between Greece and Libya, once a Libyan government is elected, and we believe that this will create another triangle of stability for Greece, Egypt and Libya in the eastern Mediterranean.

However, the former Chief of Staff of the Turkish Naval Forces, Admiral Jihad Yajici, said in an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathmerini “if Libya signs a maritime jurisdiction agreement with Greece, it will lose at least 40,000 square kilometers of the maritime area. He explained this issue at a meeting with representatives of the House of Representatives 4 months ago, and said they had concerns because of the Greek propaganda that Libya lost a maritime area and was forced to sign an agreement with Turkey, which seized its maritime rights.

The Greek newspaper reported that Admiral Yajici “drew the line connecting the coasts of the two countries, passing through an area 40 miles from Crete.”
