South Korean Foreign Minister Says Strategic Communication with China to Continue

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin said that his country will continue to step up strategic communication with China to boost their friendly ties.

In statements he made on Sunday, Jin said that South Korea’s basic stance is “to advance South Korea-China relations into that of a mature and healthy one based on mutual respect, reciprocity, and common interest.” The South Korean Foreign Minister said that there is no need to sour ties with China. This came against the backdrop of a diplomatic spat fueled earlier this month by controversial remarks made by China’s Ambassador on South Korea’s US policies.

Commenting on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent visit to China, the South Korean Foreign Minister stressed that the key takeaway is the commitment to “building a stable US-China relationship toward competition and cooperation rather than confrontation or conflict.” Earlier this month, Chinese Ambassador to South Korea said those who bet on China’s loss in its rivalry with the US would definitely regret it, in an apparent accusation to South Korea of aligning with the US and shifting away from China.
