Al-Mnifi during his meeting in Berlin with German Chancellor (Merkel), praises Germany’s role in advancing the political process in Libya.

Berlin, The President of the Presidential Council, “Mohamed Al-Mnifi” met today, Friday in Berlin, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, to discuss the latest developments in the political process in Libya.

The meeting discussed many files related to the Libyan issue, foremost of which are the elections and working to hold them on time, as well as the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces from Libya, to help the Libyan people build their democratic state. In addition to the file of national reconciliation as one of the most important ways to restore stability to Libya.

During the meeting, the President of the Presidential Council praised Germany’s role, led by Chancellor Merkel, in advancing the political process in Libya, by bringing together political parties and international and regional parties, during the last period through the two Berlin tracks.

The President expressed the continuation of work in order to reach the electoral benefits next December, pointing at the same time to follow up all the initiatives put forward in case the legal and constitutional blockage continues.

For her part, the German chancellor stressed that the future of Libya should be determined by Libyans, not foreigners, so the negative interference of other countries in Libya must stop, noting that the Libyan file is a priority for Germany.

She added that Germany is ready to support the achievement of economic stability in the country, also by encouraging companies to work in this direction.

The UNSMIL announces its participation in the Libyan consultative meeting in Rabat.

Tripoli, The United Nations Support Mission in Libya confirmed that a technical team of the mission is participating in a meeting between the delegations of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State in Rabat, Morocco, which provides an opportunity for further consultations on the legal framework for elections.

In the statement published on its page via the International Information Network, the mission stated that its participation came in response to an invitation it received to participate in this meeting, and that its technical team, (will provide technical support and advice based on the principles of the United Nations and in line with the mission’s mandate to support the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections on December 24, 2021). As stipulated in Security Council Resolution No. 2570 of 2021 and the road map approved by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

In the same statement, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya urged the two delegations to seize this opportunity, assume their historical responsibilities and proceed with completing the legislative framework for the elections.

Al-Mnifi meets in Berlin with the German president.

Berlin, This afternoon, Friday afternoon, the President of the Presidential Council, Muhammad Yunus Al-Mnifi, met with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank Stein Meyer, and the meeting was an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen friendship and cooperation relations between Libya and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Al-Mnifi had met earlier Friday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and held a joint press conference in which they talked about the depth of friendship between the two countries, as well as the role played by Germany in holding the Berlin 1 and Berlin 2 conferences to discuss the Libyan crisis and ways to reach effective solutions to it.

Russia calls on the Libyans to overcome differences to reach the December 24 elections.

New York, Russia called on all Libyan parties to overcome their differences in order to reach the elections due to be held on the 24th of next December.

This came in the words of the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, yesterday, Thursday, during his speech before the Security Council, in a session the Council adopted, on Thursday, a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission for Libya (UNSMIL) until January 31, 2022.

The Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nebenzia, was quoted by the Russian Sputnik news agency as saying: “Russia’s vote in favor of a draft Security Council resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya until January 31 next year, comes based on our conviction in the first place that there is no alternative. On the comprehensive peaceful settlement of the Libyan crisis under the auspices of the United Nations.

France in its speech before the Security Council: The work of the UN mission is crucial in supporting the political transition process and preparing for the parliamentary and presidential elections.

New York, The Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, Nicolas de Riviere, affirmed that the work of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, which is supported by France, is “critical in supporting the political transition process and preparing for the parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for December 24”.

He added, in his speech during the vote on the Security Council resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Libya, that the role of the United Nations mission “is essential to moving forward in implementing the ceasefire agreement of October 23, 2020, including supporting Libyan efforts to withdraw foreign forces and mercenaries, with the support of the International community.”

The French diplomat stressed the need to restructure the United Nations Support Mission in Libya in the next renewal in January 2022, at the request of the Secretary-General, pointing out that “this restructuring is not an objective in itself. It should be a tool to enhance the effectiveness of the mission’s work.”

He explained that France will organize, with Italy, Germany and the United Nations, an international conference on Libya at the level of heads of state and government in Paris on November 12. This is with the aim of supporting the political process, especially the organization of the Libyan legislative and presidential elections, as well as for the full implementation of the ceasefire and, on a larger scale, to achieve stability, taking into account the regional repercussions of the Libyan crisis.
