Mayors of Libyan and Italian municipalities meet in Sicily to discuss ways to strengthen local government administration.

Rome, A number of mayors of Libyan and Italian municipalities met in the city of Syracuse, Sicily, to discuss ways to enhance friendship between the Libyan and Italian municipalities, as well as to discuss the best ways in managing local government, in order to activate the initiative presented by the National League of the Italian municipalities, in regard to the meeting of the two parties.

The PM pays a visit to Gharyan Municipality and announces the implementation of a number of development projects in the municipality in the sectors of health, education, housing and utilities.

Gharyan, The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dbaiba, expressed his happiness and the ministerial delegation accompanying him to visit the municipality of Gharyan, stressing that he will visit all cities and regions in Libya to determine directly the needs of citizens and provide them.

In a speech he delivered on the occasion of his visit to the municipality, Dbaiba said, “I am honored to be in the capital of the mountain, the city that had a distinguished impact during the February 17 revolution and the sacrifices made by its sons, and that history will be written in golden letters and record these sacrifices.”

“We will not forget the wounded youth who defended our people, and we will remember them, and they and their children will be our concern,” he added.

On the implemented projects and the percentages of completion in them and the others that are suspended in roads and educational and health institutions, Dbaiba stressed that these projects will take their way to implementation.

Dbaiba announced that the government, within the project to return to life, will establish a youth center in the city to help young people to work and be creative, and to allocate a number of military sites for the benefit of Gharyan municipality according to the proposal submitted by the people of Gharyan during his meeting with them on June 14, 2021, and the adoption of the economic zone in Qadamah and the implementation of the Al-Hira Jendouba road project, And Qawasim-Tarhuna and Gharyan-Nalut.

Following the speech, a number of specialists in government bodies and institutions provided explanations about the projects allocated to the municipality in the various sectors, especially in health, education, housing and utilities

Headed by the President of the Presidential Council: Meeting of Libya’s Neighboring Countries in New York.

New York, The foreign ministers of Libya’s neighboring countries held a meeting on Friday evening on the sidelines of the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly currently being held in New York headed by the President of the Presidential Council, “Mohamed Al-Mnifi” to discuss the current situation and ways to restore security and stability in the country.

The meeting dealt with the importance of stabilizing the situation in Libya, and the role entrusted to neighboring countries in supporting a comprehensive settlement that preserves Libya’s capabilities and preserves its sovereignty away from any external interference, in addition to the election file, and the emphasis on holding it on time, as an important step towards achieving stability.

During the meeting, the President of the Presidential Council stressed the importance of the African role in resolving the Libyan crisis, whether through the African Union collectively, or through the efforts of the countries of the continent individually, praising the initiatives of neighboring countries in bridging the rift between the Libyan parties, and advancing the political process, by supporting political dialogue and its outcomes.

Mnifi reviewed the important steps taken by the Presidential Council and the National Unity Government since taking the helm of the country last February, including efforts to unify the various state institutions, which were divided, and the mechanism of action to unify the rest of the institutions, including the military, as well as the launch of a project National reconciliation, which will pave the way for free and fair elections, the results of which will be accepted by all. In this regard, he called for the contribution of neighboring countries to achieving national reconciliation among all Libyans, to cross to the stage of stability and building a democratic state.

The meeting also discussed many current issues, the situation in the region and ways to support the pillars of peace and security at the Arab and African levels, in addition to discussing mechanisms to enhance joint action between neighboring countries in various fields.

UNHCR Update Libya (24 September 2021)

So far in 2021, a total of 24,420 refugees and migrants have been reported as rescued/intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard (LCG). On 21 September, a total of 42 individuals (including eight women and four children) disembarked at the Tripoli Naval Base. The group initially embarked from Zliten (160 km east of Tripoli). UNHCR and medical partner, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), were present at disembarkation to provide urgent medical assistance and Core Relief Items (CRIs).

UNHCR Response

On 23 September, UNHCR started a two-day winter distribution campaign of relief items (CRIs) to internally displaced Tawergha families at the Fallah 1 IDP settlement in Tripoli. Nearly 300 families (over 1,200 individuals) were targeted with assistance. Items included winter boots, socks, diapers, school bags, and hygiene kits. So far in 2021, UNHCR has distributed CRIs to 32,825 IDPs while more than 700 IDPs received cash assistance to help them meet their basic needs.

Last week, UNHCR processed 516 refugees and asylumseekers at its Registration Office in Tripoli. Of these, a total of 279 individuals were registered and received their UNHCR certificates. These included nationals from Sudan (141), Syria (62), Eritrea (48), Ethiopia (10), Somalia (8), Yemen (4), South Sudan (4), and Iraq (2). As of 23 September, UNHCR has registered a total of 9,403 refugees and asylum-seekers.

During the reporting week, through partner CESVI, UNHCR has provided cash assistance to a total of 287 refugee and asylum-seeking households (700 individuals), with regular cash assistance delivered to 72 households (292 individuals), emergency cash assistance (rent component) to 208 households (391 individual), and emergency cash assistance with a full cash amount to seven households (17 individuals). So far this year, a total of 8,024 refugees and asylumseekers received cash assistance.

UNHCR’s distribution of CRIs continue to target persons of concern in Libya. Last week, partner, IRC distributed CRIs including hygiene kits and diapers to 429 refugees and asylum-seekers (213 men, 164 women and 52 children) at the Community Day Centre in Tripoli. In addition, national partner, LibAid also distributed mattresses, blankets, slippers, and hygiene kits to 87 individuals being held at the Ganfouda detention centre in eastern Libya. So far this year, UNHCR distributed more than 100,000 CRIs across the country.
