Williams: decision to set date for elections is a Libyan decision taken by Libyans

Tripoli, 7 April, 2022 (Lana) – Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephanie Williams, confirmed that she received a positive reaction from Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh regarding her initiative aimed at consensus on a constitutional basis that establishes the holding of elections in the country.

Williams said, “In an interview with BBC Arabic, she “received a very positive response from the President of the House of Representatives, in which he welcomed the United Nations initiative,” and that “the matter now is only a matter of combining the two councils, and then launching negotiations,”

She expressed her optimism that the conditions would allow for an actual meeting of the two councils.

In response to a question about the possibility of holding elections during the current year, Williams said that setting a date for holding elections in Libya is a decision taken by the Libyan authorities and taken by the Libyans.

“The sooner the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of the State reach consensus on the constitutional base, the greater the hope of reaching the election stage. It is realistic.” She added.
