UN mission in Libya calls for de-escalation and says use of force by any party will not lead to anywhere to ensure recognition by the international community

Tripoli-The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that it was following with deep concern the ongoing mobilization of forces and threats to resort to force, to settle claims of legitimacy in Libya.

In a statement it published on Tuesday the mission stressed that the current political impasse and all aspects of the crisis besetting Libya cannot be solved by armed confrontation, and that the solution to these issues can only come through the Libyan people exercising their right to choose their leaders, and renew the legitimacy of state institutions through democratic elections.

The mission indicated that it would continue to work with the relevant Libyan institutions, and all actors to get the electoral process back on track as soon as possible.

At the end of its statement, the mission called for an immediate de-escalation and reaffirmed that the use of force by any party was unacceptable and would not lead yield any outcome that would ensure recognition by the international community.
