UN High Commissioner for Human Rights calls for Libyan elections to be held in June on the basis of full respect for the political rights of all candidates and voters

Geneva-In her report to the 49th session of the Human Rights Council of the International Organization, held in Geneva, Commissioner Bachelet expressed alarm over ‘postponement of the elections scheduled for December 24, 2021, amid rising political tensions and attacks on people based on perceived opinions, political affiliation, as well as attacks on the judiciary.’

Bachelet, who holds Chilean nationality and has served as the seventh Human Rights Commissioner since September 2018, has criticized armed groups committing serious violations of international humanitarian law, as well as widespread torture, unlawful killings, enforced disappearances, violence, arbitrary arrests and detentions, on a large scale, with near-total impunity, she said.
