U.S.-European statement warns against obstructing and undermining political transition efforts in Libya

Tripoli- France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States of America have renewed their support for UN mediation efforts through the Secretary-General’s Advisor on Libya Stephanie Williams, to facilitate dialogue between Libyan parties.

‘Any dispute over the future of the political process must be resolved without resorting to violence’, the five countries said in a joint statement issued Friday, stressing their willingness to hold accountable those who threaten stability with violence or incitement.

In their statement, the five countries reiterated the United Nations Secretary-General’s call for all actors to refrain from actions that could undermine stability in Libya, expressing concern about recent reports of violence, threats of violence, intimidation and kidnappings.

The statement warned individuals or entities, both inside and outside Libya, not to obstruct or undermine efforts to successfully complete Libya’s political transition.

In their statement, the five countries reiterated their full respect for Libyan sovereignty and the UN-facilitated political process, and led and owned by Libyans. It also called on political, security and economic actors to focus on holding credible, transparent and inclusive presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible in order to realize the democratic aspirations of the Libyan people.

In their statement, the five countries encouraged all Libyan stakeholders, including the Houses of Representatives and the High Council of State to cooperate fully with the efforts and steps proposed by the United Nations, in order to establish a consensual constitutional basis that would lead to presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible. They have also shown their willingness to work with Libya and all international partners to build a more peaceful and stable future for the country and its people, and to support their stability, independence, territorial integrity and national unity.
