The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives condemns the British interference in the internal affairs of Libya.

Tobruk, The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives condemned the statement issued by the United Kingdom’s embassy in Libya yesterday, Friday, which it considered unacceptable interference in the internal Libyan affairs.

The committee expressed in a statement today, Saturday, its astonishment that this statement came in the context of the British Embassy’s congratulations to the Libyan people on the country’s Independence Day, considering that the British statement is a violation of diplomatic norms, and has caused popular resentment throughout the country.

In its statement, the committee stressed that the Libyan people, through the official institutions that represent them, are the decision-maker in the affairs of their country, stressing that choosing a new government or maintaining the current one is a choice for the Libyan House of Representatives, and everyone must respect the rules of democratic governance.

The statement affirmed the House of Representatives’ keenness to fulfill the aspirations of the Libyan people to hold presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible and to resolve all obstacles facing this, noting that the House of Representatives fulfilled its duties in approving the parliamentary and presidential elections law and following up on the work of the High Electoral Commission.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives welcomed working with all international partners supporting the stability of Libya, provided that the different points of view and respect for the legitimate authorities in Libya are respected, according to the text of the statement.

The committee called on everyone to contribute to creating suitable conditions for the elections by avoiding media escalation and provoking internal disputes and strife at a time when the House of Representatives seeks to achieve the greatest degree of local and international consensus.
