The European Union representative to the African Sahel region: Without stability in Libya, there will be no stability in the Sahel Region.

Tripoli, The European Union’s Special Representative for the Sahel, Emanuela del Rey, affirmed that “without stability in Libya, there will be no stability in the Sahel region,” according to the Nova news agency.

This came during a meeting held in Rome with Admiral “Stefano Torchetto”, commander of the European Air and Naval Operation Irini, to monitor the arrival of weapons to Libya.

“The Sahel can be considered as the true southern border of Europe,” said Del Rey, according to Nova.

She added that the region “is characterized by various crises such as what is happening in Mali, Burkina Faso and Chad where armed groups are deployed, often affiliated with terrorist organizations or private mercenary companies such as the Russian Wagner Group, which are very active and expanding their influence.”

“People’s lives and their human rights at risk are the foundations of the EU’s integrated approach and the goal of a common policy focusing on women and men living in the region,” she said.

For his part, Admiral Torketo stressed during the meeting the interdependence between Libya and the Sahel, saying that peace is the effect we seek for Libya and the entire Sahel region.

He said the operation supports “the implementation of United Nations resolutions and the provision of stability and security in the central Mediterranean, North Africa and the Sahel.”
