Rail Chaos in Italy after Freight Train Derails

Rail commuters in Italy faced major disruption on Thursday after the wagon of a freight train derailed near a Florence station.

This led to the suspension of rail traffic between Florence and Bologna, affecting connections between the north and south of the country.

There was nobody injured in the incident, which occurred between Sesto Fiorentino and Firenze Castello, in the early hours of Thursday.

However there was significant damage caused to rail infrastructure. The accident has interrupted high-speed services between north and south Italy, including the Milan-Rome and Venice-Rome routes and on the Florence-Prato-Viareggio regional line.

Italian rail firm Trenitalia announced that at least 50 cancellations and delays of up to three hours, while other routes were diverted.
