Prime Minister of the National Unity Government: We will only hand over power to an elected government

Tripoli- The Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdel Hamid al-Dabaiba, renewed, on Sunday, his refusal to hand over power except to a government that emerged from new parliamentary or presidential elections.

In a speech during the third regular cabinet meeting this year, the prime minister accused the parliament and the state of trying to mix the cards to extend their mandate again by imposing a new political reality, starting with the closure of the Constitutional Court and then trying to impose a parallel government despite the disagreement of all parties.

The Prime Minister of the National Unity Government affirmed that his government’s road map is still in place and has full legitimacy emanating from the Geneva Accords, the political dialogue, the Paris Conference, the international community and the Security Council.

Dabaiba welcomed the United Nations’ proposal to form a joint committee of the House of Representatives and the state to find a constitutional basis that would pave the way for the upcoming elections, stressing that his government would go in any direction that would go to elections, the democratic option that Libyans have been waiting for for years.

The Prime Minister called on the ministers in his government to continue their work, not listen to rumors, serve the citizens, take their decisions with boldness and courage, and preserve the people’s money.

The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity indicated that there is support at the international level for his government’s position rejecting the transitional stages and demanding elections, which was informed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, the European Union and a number of heads of state and friendly governments.
