President of the Presidential Council at the Addis Ababa summit: We look forward to the African Union supporting the mechanism and plans to remove mercenaries and foreign troops from Libya.

Addis Ababa, President of the Presidential Council Mohamed Al Mnefi congratulated Senegalese President Maki Sal on his selection as President of the African Union this year, expressing confidence in his wisdom in moving forward towards meeting the aspirations of the African peoples to implement the 2063 agenda, and achieve peace and security across the continent.

At the beginning of his speech at the 35th Regular Session of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Al Mnefi also congratulated members of the African Union Office, which includes Libya in its membership, and thanked the countries of the northern region that supported Libya for this membership, hoping that the commission would be supportive of the President of the African Union in overcoming the challenges facing the Union in various fields.

President of the Presidential Council Mohamed Al-Mnefi said the positive conditions that followed the signing of the ceasefire declaration, with the support of the African Union and its high-level committee, contributed to creating the right environment for unifying the Libyan institutions, and strengthened confidence among Libyans, explaining that this was reflected in the election of a presidential council and a government of national unity, to give hope to the Libyan people to overcome their political, economic and security plight, and paved the way towards comprehensive national reconciliation.

“The High Commission for National Reconciliation has been established in the past months, with a view to holding a comprehensive conference for Libyan across the spectrum, aimed at achieving comprehensive national reconciliation, achieving sustainable stability, and we look forward to the African Union, through its high-level committee, to support the reconciliation conference in Libya and to benefit from similar African experiences,” Al Mnefi said.

Al Mnefi reiterated the proposal he made to the UN General Assembly in September 2021, calling on the parties concerned to facilitate consensus, leading to free, fair and acceptable elections, saving the country entering into the challenges of a new crisis, maintaining the political process, and holding elections acceptable to all.

At the end of his speech, Al Mnefi expressed his aspiration that the African Union support the mechanism and plans to get all mercenaries and foreign forces out of Libya, and to call for non-interference in Libya’s internal affairs, which led to further complexity of the crisis.
