In a series of tweets, Ambassador Norland said, “I am encouraged by this evening’s calls with Prime Minister of National Unity, Dabaiba and Fathi Bashagha, and to hear that both leaders are committed to avoiding violence and finding ways to calm the situation in the wake of the recent tragic deaths.

Norland added, “I conveyed deep concerns on the part of “Bashagha” that his rights to political expression are being threatened, including by armed groups, and also conveyed the concerns of “Dabaiba” about the steps he considered disruptive to public order).

The US ambassador pointed out that the basis of the differences between the parties is the issue of legitimacy, which can only be resolved through elections, explaining that he discussed in each call the possible steps that can be taken to restore momentum towards elections in Libya.
