Libyan Political Dialogue Forum Resumes In Geneva On Second Day To Discuss Constitutional Basis For Presidential And Parliamentary Elections.

Geneva, Libyan Political Dialogue Forum resumed session on Tuesday to discuss the constitutional basis for presidential and parliamentary elections put forward by the legal commission selected by the Forum.

Participants discuss, at the UN-sponsored meeting in Geneva, completion of the provisions of the roadmap emanating from the Forum, including and foremost the 24 Dec elections, the constitutional basis and unifying institutions including the military one.

The second day was marked by sharp disagreement in views and visions between members on the constitutional basis, was so deep that it cast doubt on unanimity over the proposal laid down by the advisory committee at the latest meeting in Tunis.

The UN Special Envoy to Libya Jan Kupis, called at the opening of the meeting yesterday for approval of the constitutional basis before July 1st, so that the Election Commission can prepare for the elections, noting that Parliament did not live up to its responsibilities to approve the constitutional basis . He called on member of the Forum to seek to overpass their differences.

‘Libya’s future cannot be left to those who put their interests first rather than those of the homeland.

There is no way to leave Geneva without an agreement on the constitutional basis, he said. In case of no agreement, there must be a mechanism in place to vote on the proposal, he added.
