Coordinator of UNSMIL, “Risdon Zeninga”, discusses with members of the Military Committee on the eastern region efforts to calm down and stop the escalation.

Tripoli- The Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, the Coordinator of the Mission, “Resdon Zeninga”, requested the Joint Military Committee (5+5) to continue its cooperation with the United Nations, including providing the necessary support to facilitate the work of the ceasefire monitoring unit of the United Nations in Sirt.

This came during his meeting today in Benghazi with the five members of the Joint Military Committee in the Eastern Region (5 + 5) to hear them regarding the reasons for the measures announced in their statement issued on April 9, according to what the mission published on its website.

During the meeting, Zeninga praised the important achievements of the Joint Military Committee, stressing the commitment of the United Nations to urge the efforts focused towards finding a permanent solution to the outstanding issues, stressing the importance of avoiding escalation and resolving differences through dialogue and preserving the work and what has been accomplished by the committee.

For their part, the five members of the eastern region of the Joint Military Committee expressed their concern about the current situation and its consequences for living in the eastern region.

Members also raised urgent issues that are still pending, which put the work of the (5+5) Committee and the progress made on the security track to the test.

The five members stressed the importance of the commitments of the Government of National Unity towards the eastern region, which plays a vital role in securing oil production and contributing to the security and stability currently established in Libya.
