Al-Lafi during a panel discussion: National Reconciliation Project addresses shortcomings of previous legislations

Tripoli- Presidential Council Vice-President Abdullah Al-Lafi chaired on Monday morning in Tripoli a panel discussion organized by the Council on the national reconciliation project, in the presence of the Minister of Justice Halima Al-Bousifi and the President of the Supreme Court, Mohamed Al-Hafi.

The activities of the seminar were also attended by the President of the National Planning Council Naji Al-Harir, the President of the National Council for Public Freedoms and Human Rights “Omar Hijazi” and a number of law professors in Libyan universities, as well as a number of people interested in the law of reconciliation who participated via video technology.

In his speech to the audience, Al-Lafi stressed that today’s meeting comes under increasingly difficult circumstances, due to the continuing disagreement between the political parties, to discuss a project that constitutes a key pillar in the national reconciliation project, namely the draft transitional justice law.

He explained that this project, addressing the shortcomings of previous legislation, by drafting a unified law, enables the country’s leaders to speak with one voice, and unite their ranks.

For his part, the President of the Supreme Court, Mohamed Al-Hafi, stressed that Libyans need reconciliation, opening a new page and overcoming differences, to ensure stability, explaining that the provisions of drafting the law, will lay a solid foundation for a comprehensive reconciliation, to which all Libyans aspire.

In her speech during at the opening session of the panel discussion, the Minister of Justice stressed the need for Libyans to draft a law for reconciliation, in light of the circumstances the country is going through, stressing the need to benefit from the experiences of countries in this field, which have been exhausted by civil wars for many years, and with reconciliation and amnesty their hatred has been forgotten and achieved stability.

For his part, the Chairman of the Legal Committee of the Bill, Dr. Al-Kuni Abbouda, explained that today’s meeting came to discuss the draft reconciliation prepared by a group of specialists in the legal field, academics, and judges, to try to harmonize the provisions of the draft, from the point of view of local reality and international standards, to put it within the framework of community participation, with the aim of reaching consensus on it, and to take advantage of all the observations, which were raised in the panel discussion to crystallize and benefit from them.
