The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Abdullah Batili, said, on Monday, that the meeting of the military and security leaders in Tripoli yesterday, Sunday, was a confidence-building process.

The UN envoy, in a tweet on his Twitter account, praised the patriotic spirit shown by the participants in the meeting, hoping that they would set an example for others seeking solutions to the political crisis in Libya.

The members of the Joint Military Committee (5 + 5) and the leaders of the security and military units in the western, eastern and southern regions of Libya, renewed in their meeting yesterday in Tripoli their commitment to renouncing fighting and violence in all its forms on all Libyan soil.

According to a statement issued by the Presidential Council, Batili briefed Lafi about his meeting with security and military leaders in Tripoli yesterday evening, and his consultations with local and international parties to ensure holding elections during the current year.

The meeting will discuss the file of national reconciliation and the steps taken by the Council to convene the comprehensive conference for reconciliation.

Al-Lafi said in a tweet on Twitter, “During the meeting, we stressed the need to accelerate progress towards the elections, noting the emphasis on the need for guarantees that enable the restoration of confidence between the political parties competing for power to ensure the success of the elections and the participation of all in them.”

In this meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the United Nations Summit on the Good Management of Water Resources in New York, Al-Koni renewed the Presidential Council’s support for the efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Abdullah Batili, to accomplish the electoral process before the end of 2023 in light of a consensus based on national sovereignty. He stressed the need to prepare for the holding of elections within the specified deadline, and to benefit in this regard from the support of United Nations experts to achieve this goal

For her part, the Under-Secretary-General praised the Presidency Council’s support for the efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, and the qualitative level of partnership between the United Nations and the Presidency Council to reach the elections.

The UN official reaffirmed that the United Nations will not delay in supporting the electoral process in Libya with various expertise that the stage may require.
