Miami International Holdings Reports February 2022 Trading Results; MGEX Sets New Volume Records

PRINCETON, N.J., March 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Miami International Holdings, Inc. today reported February 2022 trading results for its U.S. exchange subsidiaries – MIAX®, MIAX Pearl® and MIAX Emerald® (together, the MIAX Exchange Group™), and Minneapolis Grain Exchange (MGEX™).

Total U.S. multi-listed options market share for the MIAX Exchange Group reached 14.2% in February 2022, 85 basis points higher than the 13.4% market share in February 2021 and representing a 6.3% increase. The MIAX Exchange Group collectively executed 107.5 million multi-listed options contracts in February 2022, a 2.3% increase from February 2021 and representing an average daily volume (ADV) of 5,656,375 contracts.

In U.S. equities, MIAX Pearl Equities™ reported total volume of 2.1 billion shares in February 2022, a decline of 13.2% from January 2022 and representing a market share of 0.92%.

MGEX, a Designated Contract Market (DCM) and Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO), reported record February 2022 trading volume of 311,768 contracts, a 7.6% increase from February 2021 and representing the highest volume total for February in MGEX history.  Total year-to-date volume reached a record 588,919 contracts, an increase of 11.4% from the same period in 2021.

SPIKES® Futures volume totaled 57,738 contracts in February 2022, a 30.2% decline from the 82,713 contract total in January 2022 and representing an ADV of 3,039 contracts.

Four migrants die of ‘cold and hunger’ in Tunisia

TUNIS— The bodies of four African migrants have been found in eastern Tunisia, authorities said, saying they had probably died of cold or hunger after crossing the Algerian border.

“Three bodies were found on Wednesday and another one five days ago in Haidra, Kasserine governorate” near the Algerian border, said the region’s medical chief, Abdelghani Chaabani.

All four were men aged between 20 and 35. The only one carrying an identity document was from the Ivory Coast, he said.

The bodies were transferred to a hospital in the regional capital, also called Kasserine, for autopsies, “but it is very likely that they died of cold and hunger”, he said.

In recent years, hundreds of migrants have passed through Tunisia with the aim of making clandestine bids to reach Europe by sea.

Many head for the Italian island of Lampedusa, just 140km from Tunisian shores.

The International Organisation for Migration says some 8,000 people have died since 2014 attempting the trip from Libya and Tunisia to Italy and Malta, known as the Central Mediterranean Route.

Tunisia and Libya, which saw uprisings in 2011 that left Tunisia in political turmoil and tipped Libya into a decade of armed violence, both saw an uptick in migrant departures in 2021.

More than 123,000 migrants landed in Italy in 2021, compared to some 95,000 the previous year, according to the UN’s refugee agency UNHCR.

Libya’s parliament-approved gov’t sworn in

TRIPOLI— The newly-approved government of Libya on Thursday was sworn in before the House of Representatives, the country’s parliament, in the eastern city of Tubruk, Libyan National TV reported.

“The government should create all suitable conditions for the elections, in accordance with the established roadmap,” Aguila Saleh, the speaker of the House of Representatives, said in a speech during the oath session.

“The government must lift the state of force majeure that impeded the holding of the elections on December 24 last year,” Saleh said, demanding the government of national unity to hand over power to the new government democratically.

Prime Minister-designate Fathi Bashagha of the parliament-approved government said his administration would begin to consider all options and necessary arrangements to resume office in the capital Tripoli “legally and not by force.”

Bashagha pledged that his government would work to “end the transitional phases and support the electoral process” in the country.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday granted confidence to a new government to replace the incumbent government of national unity led by Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah.

The House of Representatives withdrew confidence from Dbeibah’s government in September last year and kept it as a caretaker government. On Feb. 10, it unanimously voted to appoint Bashagha, former interior minister, as the new prime minister.

However, Dbeibah vowed his government would remain in office until an elected government is established. On Feb. 21, he announced a plan to hold general elections in June.

Dbeibah’s government on Tuesday accused the House of Representatives of approving the new government “without achieving quorum” during the session, confirming that it would continue to work and prepare for elections in June.

General elections in Libya were scheduled for Dec. 24 last year, but were postponed indefinitely due to technical and legal issues, according to the country’s elections commission.

Williams proposes the formation of a joint House and State committee to establish a consensual constitutional rule

Tripoli- Today, Friday, the Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, sent a letter to both Presidents of the House of Representatives and the State, proposing the formation of a joint committee from the two sides to work on establishing a consensual constitutional basis.

Williams said in the text of her message, which she published via a series of tweets on Twitter, that the work of the committee will be under the auspices of the United Nations, within 14 days, starting on March 15, at a place to be determined after the approval of the two councils.

According to Williams’ proposal, this committee consists of six members of the House of Representatives and the same from the Supreme Council of State, stressing once again the fundamental importance of maintaining security and stability and refraining from all acts of escalation, intimidation, kidnapping, provocation and violence.

“The solution to the Libyan crisis is not in the formation of competing administrations and permanent transitional stages,” she said, stressing the need for Libyans to agree on a consensual way forward that prioritizes preserving the country’s unity and stability.

She concluded her message by saying, “I await a quick response from both houses to this proposal, and I reiterate the responsibility of the Libyan institutions to show good faith in working and engaging constructively together to move towards elections for the 2.8 million Libyans who registered to vote in the presidential and parliamentary elections.”

Al-Manqoush praises Romania’s role in providing support for the evacuation of Libyan nationals in Ukraine

Bucharest– The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Najla Al-Manqoush, expressed her thanks and gratitude for the logistical and humanitarian assistance provided by Romania, and for providing support to facilitate the evacuation of Libyans, cooperation with the Embassy of Libya in Romania, and the establishment of an operations room to facilitate work between them without any discrimination between nationalities.

This came during her meeting today with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Romania, Cornel Ferutza, at the Romanian Foreign Ministry headquarters in the capital, Bucharest, in the presence of members of the Committee for Securing the Return of the Libyan Community in Ukraine, Consul General in Turkey Salah Al-Kaseh, and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education Saleh Al-Ghoul.

For his part, the Undersecretary of the Romanian Foreign Ministry stressed that his country did not request any documents from the Libyans and granted them a free visa when they entered Romania.

The meeting discussed bilateral relations between the two countries for the benefit of the two peoples, the Ukrainian crisis and how to support the Ukrainian people and government politically and humanitarianly, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
