State-of-the-art Laboratories to Ensure Purity of Zamzam Water

Makkah, The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has provided a laboratory for analyzing Zamzam water and supervising all sterilization stages, to ensure the cleanliness and purity of Zamzam water.

Zamzam water is sterilized with ultraviolet rays; no chemical substances are added, to ensure that there is no change in its color, taste or smell.

The sterilization ensures the eradication of 99.77%, of bacteria and viruses; one kilowatt of electricity sterilizes 12,000 gallons of water.

To preserve the safety of Zamzam water, several measures are taken, including pumping it from the Zamzam well into a closed circuit of rustproof (stainless steel) pipes and fully enclosed tanks fitted with filters to block sands and impurities, and prevent any chemical reaction or microbiological activity. Then, the Zamzam water goes through initial sterilization devices, and when the water is pumped from the tanks to the Grand Mosque, it again passes through filters to prevent any res
idues from seeping through, and then undergoes UV sterilization once more.

Analyses of Zamzam water are conducted in specialized laboratories, to detect any chemical or microbiological pollutants.

The authority requires health certificates from all those involved in distributing Zamzam water, to ensure that they do not carry infectious diseases, and continuous cleaning of the bases on which the containers are placed.

The Zamzam water department at the Grand Mosque has been overseeing the Zamzam well since 1400 Hijri; it provides cooled and continuous Zamzam water in containers whose cleanliness it ensures.

There are over 20,000 containers at the Grand Mosque, and the number increases during Ramadan and the Hajj seasons. There are also 1,073 Zamzam water taps, in addition to 223 tanks provided during Ramadan and the Hajj seasons. Zamzam water is cooled at Al-Qashashiah cooling station.
