Egyptian club Al Ahly want the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn a decision giving Morocco hosting rights to the 2022 CAF Champions League final. The Cairo outfit confirmed on Tuesday in a press release that they had approached the world sport judicial body in Switzerland after an appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) failed. Wydad Casablanca of Morocco are likely to play Ahly in the May 30 title decider and the Egyptians say it would be “unfair for one club to have home advantage”. “Al Ahly has presented an appeal to CAS against the decision of CAF not to organi… Continue reading “Ahly appeal Morocco’s hosting of CAF Champions League final”

Libyan parliament says Bashagha govt should start work in Sirte

Libya’s parliament wants the government it has appointed under Fathi Bashagha to be based for now in Sirte, it said on Tuesday, amid a stalemate over control of the capital Tripoli where another administration refuses to hand over power. The move represents the clearest acknowledgement since the parliament appointed Bashagha in March that he cannot take over in Tripoli yet with Libya paralysed by its crisis of two governments. Deadlock between Bashagha and Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah, who was appointed prime minister last year, risks igniting a new round of conflict in Libya after two years of compa… Continue reading “Libyan parliament says Bashagha govt should start work in Sirte”

Like all countries which border Syria, Turkey has had to react to the worst of that country’s decade-long civil war. Millions of Syrians have fled, and tens of millions have been displaced. According to United Nations numbers, Turkey is currently hosting up to 3.6 million Syrian refugees – although the true number is likely larger. Many Syrians are not registered either with the Turkish state or with UN agencies. That number of people poses an administrative and financial challenge, but even more so, it is a political problem. Over the past ten years, Turkey’s government has dealt with hostili… Continue reading “Turkish politics and the future of Syrian refugees”

The UK has allegedly refused a request to hand over artefacts ‘stolen’ from Libya more than 200 years ago, according to media reports on Sunday. A London-based lawyer, Mohamed ben Shaban, submitted an official request last month to the Crown Estate of Queen Elizabeth II, asking for columns from the ancient Roman settlement of Leptis Magna in Libya to be returned, Al-Wasat reported. The columns were ‘stolen’ in 1816 from the Augustus Temple in Leptis Magna, whose ruins are located with present-day Khoms, 130 kilometres south of the capital Tripoli, on the Mediterranean coast. A dissident Libyan parliament that does not recognise the country’s internationally-backed authorities will participate in renewed talks seeking to pave the way for delayed elections, the Libya adviser to the head of the United Nations said Friday.
