Qatar Participates in Panel Discussion on Health in Eastern Mediterranean Region


The State of Qatar participated in a panel discussion organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean in Geneva under the title “From Crisis to Opportunity: Health in Eastern Mediterranean Region.” HE Minister of Public Health Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari represented the State of Qatar at the panel discussion.

In her speech during the session, HE Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari affirmed that the State of Qatar, under the wise leadership of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, attaches great importance to international cooperation and solidarity in helping countries, peoples, and communities suffering from humanitarian crises.

Her Excellency noted the announcement by HH the Amir at the opening of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) to provide a financial contribution totaling USD 60 million to support the development process in the LDCs.

Her Excellency said that the current conflicts have caused enormous suffering to p
eople, exacerbating the fragile health infrastructure in conflict-affected countries, and leaving thousands in urgent need of medical care and access to basic services.

Her Excellency emphasized the need to prioritize rebuilding health systems in countries suffering from conflict and ensuring that they are fair, just, sustainable, and equipped to meet the needs of their populations now and in the near future.

Her Excellency indicated that health is essential to advancing peace and reconciliation in the region as health knows no borders or obstacles, and it is a universal human right that transcends politics and ideology. By investing in health and enhancing cooperation, understanding, trust, and cooperation between countries can be strengthened and the foundations of lasting peace and stability can be laid.

Her Excellency stressed the importance of coordination between member states to exchange lessons, innovative solutions, and experiences to deal with the ongoing threats of non-communicable diseases, ant
imicrobial resistance, emerging diseases, and humanitarian crises.

Her Excellency also affirmed the importance of countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region investing available resources and expertise, including the valuable contributions of youth, the health workforce, researchers, policy-makers, and communities as a whole. She noted that by harnessing the power of partnerships and investing in education, research, and development, progress in science and technology can be achieved, accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the region and beyond.

HE the Minister of Public Health called for adopting a bold vision for the future of health in the Eastern Mediterranean region, so that it is a vision characterized by flexibility, innovation, and equity, stressing that through collective action, adversities can be transformed into gifts and opportunities, and a path towards a healthier and more prosperous future for all can be charted.

During the panel discussion, HE the Ministe
r of Public Health reviewed some of the distinguished achievements in the State of Qatar, including innovation in health care, the health workforce, and the pharmaceutical industries.

The panel discussion saw the participation of a number of senior officials and specialists in the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Dr. Hanan Balkhy.

Deaths, Injuries Reported as Russia and Ukraine Exchange Strikes


Russia and Ukraine exchanged strikes that left a number of civilians in both sides killed and injured.

Governor of Belgorod Province, Vyacheslav Gladkov, announced that two people were killed and 10 others were injured, as a result of a Ukrainian bombing that targeted a village in Belgorod.

Ukrainian armed forces bombed the village of Oktyabrsky in Belgorod using cluster missiles, killing two people and wounding 10 others, including an eight-year-old child, Gladkov said in a statement, adding that a residential building caught fire after the shell fell, before rescue teams arrived at the scene.

For its part, Ukraine announced that four people were killed and dozens injured in Russian strikes on the city of Kharkiv.

Governor of the region, Oleh Sinhopov, said that four were killed when a store was targeted with two guided bombs, and 40 others were injured, while the fate of 16 people remains unknown.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to Ukraine’s Western allies to help strengthen air defense
s to keep the country’s cities safe.

Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, and affirmed that it will continue until its full goals are achieved.

Ambassador of Cyprus to Qatar: HH the Amir’s Visit is Tangible Indication of Significance the Two Countries Attribute to Bilateral Relations


Doha: HE the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the State of Qatar Nicholas Manols said that the visit of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is a tangible indication of the significance the two countries attribute to their bilateral relation and their fruitful cooperation in various fields.

His Excellency said, in exclusive statements to Qatar News Agency , this official visit is important as is taking place just six months after the official visit of HE President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides to Doha, which indicates the significance the two countries attribute to their bilateral relation in all fields.

He noted that the exploration of ways and means to further strengthen bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of the two friendly countries and peoples will be the main topics of deliberation, as well as other topics of mutual interest, adding that there are Agreements and Memorandum of Understandings that will be signed.

HE the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the
State of Qatar said that the repeated visits between officials from the two countries, to Nicosia and to Doha, respectively, in the higher and highest level, reflects the flourishing level of the bilateral relations as well as the common attention and concern to topics related to our broader geographical area in the Gulf and the Middle East.

His Excellency explained that Cyprus is the closest EU country to the Gulf with a daily direct flight from Hamad International Airport to Larnaca International Airport (and vice versa) which further facilitate, the people-to people contacts, especially in the field of tourism, business, culture and higher education.

“The recent frequent visits of officials between Cyprus and Qatar, without any doubt significantly illustrate, as already stressed, the mutual willingness of the two countries and their leaderships to enhance further and upgrade the level of their bilateral relationship, which is based on the respect and adherence to the international law and legality as wel
l as on the friendship and interaction between our peoples and societies in all levels,” he said.

Iraq: 2 Killed, 6 Injured in IED Attacks


Two members of the Iraqi security forces were killed and six others were injured when two explosive devices exploded west of Baquba District in northeastern Iraq.

A security source said that two explosive devices exploded near the village of Dawoud Al-Salem while a security patrol was passing, killing two members of the security forces and wounding six others.

The security forces imposed strict measures to search the area in anticipation of the presence of another bomb, he added.

Explosive devices left behind by ISIS in various governorates of Iraq explode from time to time and cause casualties.

HH the Amir to Visit Cyprus, Greece


Doha: HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani will head Monday to the Republic of Cyprus on an official visit, followed by a state visit to the Hellenic Republic, at the invitation of the two countries’ leaders.

During the two visits, HH the Amir will hold discussions with the presidents and senior officials of the two friendly countries, on to ways to enhance cooperation relations, in addition to exchanging views on various regional and international issues of common concern.

HH the Amir will be accompanied by an official delegation.
