5 Killed, 50 Injured in Stage Collapse at Mexico Campaign Rally

At least five people were killed and 50 others were injured when a stage collapsed during a rally for Mexican presidential election candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez in the city of San Pedro Garza Garcia, in the state of Nuevo Leon, northern Mexico.

A tragedy occurred, as there are initially five dead, and about 50 wounded with various injuries, some of them serious, State Governor Samuel Garcia said.

Candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez said that a strong storm caused the stage to collapse during the event, explaining that he was fine after being transferred to a local hospital, but members of his team were injured in the accident.

Sweden to Support Ukraine with EUR 6.5 Billion Military Aid

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that his country will provide Ukraine with military aid worth 6.5 billion Euros distributed over three years.

Addressing Ukrainians when announcing the aid package in Stockholm, Kristersson said that this support will help finance long-term donations of additional military equipment and the purchase of new materials for direct supply from the defense sector to Ukraine, adding that Ukraines issue is Swedens issue.

Since the beginning of the “Russian invasion” more than two years ago, Sweden has already collected 15 packages of military aid for Ukraine, Kristersson added.

The new defense aid will be distributed over the years from 2024 to 2026, and according to the government in Stockholm, the total promised military and civilian aid from Sweden will rise to 100 billion Swedish krona ($9.3 billion).

17 Martyrs in Israeli Occupation Shelling in Gaza, Rafah

At least 17 Palestinians, including more than ten children, were martyred, and dozens were injured at dawn Thursday, after the Israeli occupation forces targeted two homes in the cities of Gaza and Rafah.

Palestinian news agency (WAFA) reported that 16 Palestinians, including ten children, were martyred, and a number of citizens were injured following the occupation bombing of a house in Al-Daraj neighborhood in central Gaza City.

A person was killed after the occupation forces targeted a house belonging to Al-Shaer family in Rafah, WAFA added.

The occupation forces targeted, Thursday dawn, a house in Nuseirat Camp in the central Gaza Strip, leading to eight martyrs.

The unprecedented Israeli occupation aggression against the Gaza Strip by sea, land and air has been continuing for 230 days, causing a complete humanitarian catastrophe embodied by tens of thousands of martyrs, wounded and missing persons, along with massive destruction of vital infrastructure and facilities.

Qatar Deposits Instrument of Acceptance of WTO’s Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies

HE Permanent Representative of State of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Dr. Hind bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah, deposited the State of Qatars instrument of acceptance of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. The instrument was presented to HE WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in a meeting on May 22, attended by Director of the State of Qatars office at the WTO and other economic organizations in Geneva, Ahmed Issa Al Sulaiti.

The negotiations for the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies began with the Doha Round in 2001, and it was signed at the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference in June 2022, as a means to fulfill Goal 14.6 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which prohibit certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing, eliminate subsidies that contribute to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

armful subsidies, which are a key factor in the widespread depletion of the world’s fish stocks. ending the estimated US$22 billion per year in harmful fisheries subsidies. It prohibits support for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, bans support for fishing overfished stocks and ends subsidies for fishing on the unregulated high seas.

The Agreement also safeguards the livelihoods of the 260 million people who depend on these oceans and recognizes the needs of developing and least-developed countries and establishes a fund to provide technical assistance and capacity building to help them implement the obligations.

The State of Qatar’s acceptance of the agreement reflects the attention it gives to implementing the global goals for sustainable development 2030. It also supports international efforts in developing the sustainability of fisheries resources, and renews the State’s commitment to its international pledges, especially with regard to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution No.
70 on Sept. 25, 2015 regarding the SDGs specifically Goal No. 14 related to conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources to achieve sustainable development.

As a commitment by the State of Qatar to support global efforts to achieve these goals, the State of Qatar supported this agreement in the stages of its formulation during the rounds of negotiations since its launch within the Doha Round in 2001, and today by ratifying it to accelerate its entry into force, stressing the distinguished role it continues to play as a pioneering country on the path to sustainable development.

MCIT Announces Participation of 4 Data Providers in Arabic GenAI Project (Fanar)

Doha: The Artificial Intelligence Committee at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) announced Wednesday the participation of four prominent institutions in the Arabic Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) project “Fanar”.

This announcement was made during a meeting that included representatives from the government and academic sectors. The participating institutions are the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf), Qatar National Library (QNL), Al Jazeera, and the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS).

This collaboration is part of ongoing efforts by MCIT and its partners to provide Fanar with high-quality data and achieve a target of 300 billion words for the Arabic GenAI model, Fanar.

Fanar project was announced at the opening of the 4th edition of Qatar Economic Forum.

The data providers will contribute to building an extensive database of Arabic content, which will serve as a valuable resource for AI solutions such as machine translation, voice
recognition, and natural language processing in Arabic. These new data sources will enhance the development of a more accurate and efficient linguistic model for Fanar, thereby improving its overall performance and understanding of the Arabic language.

The involvement of these prestigious institutions marks a significant step in the development of Fanar project, aligning with its goals to empower the performance of Arabic GenAI, strengthen the Arabic position on the global stage, and broaden its applications.

Commenting on this cooperation, HE Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammed bin Ali Al Mannai, said, “We are pleased with the participation of data provider institutions in the Arabic GenAI project “Fanar”. This participation is a significant step in developing the project, as these entities possess rich and diverse historical, linguistic, cultural, and technical resources of Arabic content.” His Excellency added, “We believe that this cooperation will have a positive impact on th
e Arabic Large Language Models (LLMs), and we look forward to having more local and international parties to join as data sources for Fanar project. This will support our efforts to preserve our authentic Arabic language and its essence. As the diversity of data sources increases, the projects richness and ability to interact with Arabic content will become more accurate and comprehensive.” Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) will contribute to the project by providing religious and cultural content through the linguistic resources available on its Islamic Network website, “Islam Web.” This includes a vast array of Islamic sciences, legal fatwas, and advisory services in medicine, culture, and family matters.

The Ministry mentioned that its participation in Fanar comes as part of its commitment to enhancing cooperation and partnership with the state institutions and its mission to serve the Qatari community and the global audience. Awqaf aims to strengthen the role of Islam in promoting human
values and high moral principles. It also seeks to teach and disseminate the Arabic language, one of the most historically and culturally rich languages in the world.

Director of IT Operations and Infrastructure at QNL Dr. Nasser bin Salem Al Ansari said that this collaboration aligns with the library’s mission to preserve the heritage of the country and the region and underscores QNL’s commitment to highlighting the richness of the Arabic language through various initiatives and activities.

He further elaborated on the library’s significant strides in digitizing Arabic texts, “The library has come a long way in digitizing Arabic texts with high accuracy, and we have a substantial amount of digital Arabic content. As part of our participation in Fanar project, we are pleased to contribute our technical capabilities in the field of digitization, as well as the digital and digitized content we possess, including Arabic publications, documents, manuscripts, magazines, newspapers, and books.” Al Jazeera Network

Head of the Digital and Arabic Social Field Unit at ACRPS Dr. Fadi Zaraqat emphasized the importance of building Arabic LLMs. He stated that developing such models is central to the centers mission, with their own models being developed under the name DALLA: Doha Arabic Large Language Model, based on open-source prototypes.

Dr. Zaraqat highli
ghted the necessity of developing local, culturally aware Arabic models for various knowledge sectors, particularly in education and media. He pointed out that the widespread use of these models in these sectors would influence the spread and dominance of content and the value systems embedded in the linguistic models. ACRPS views its contribution to building these models as a core interest and it expressed its appreciation to MCITs initiative in this domain.

As the founder of Fanar project, the Qatar Computing Research Institute seeks to provide innovative and advanced solutions in artificial intelligence. It also works to develop projects that enhance technical capabilities and contribute to achieving scientific and research development in Qatar and the region.

Police Academy Celebrates Graduation of Course for Civil Universities Graduates

Doha: The Police Academy celebrated today the graduation of the operations course for the ninth compulsory qualification course for graduates of civil universities, which included 89 trainees.

The graduation ceremony at the academy was attended by HE Advisor to the Minister of Interior and Vice President of the Supreme Council of the Police Academy Major-General Dr. Abdullah Yousef Al Mal, along with several officials from the academy.

The graduation ceremony witnessed the trainees executing a number of distinguished scenarios that demonstrate their high proficiency during the training missions and their ability to deal with various events efficiently and competently.

It is worth noting that the course lasted for three weeks, during which the trainees received comprehensive training in disassembly and assembly of weapons, shooting, checkpoint operations, inspection, combat in built-up areas, mountain descent, helicopter rappelling, and other field exercises.
