The Secretary General of the Arab League welcomes the statement of the Presidents of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State

Cairo- The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Abou Al-Gheit, welcomed the joint statement issued by the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State regarding the constitutional document and the road map under Egyptian auspices, following their discussions in Cairo, Thursday, January 5.

Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that the Secretary-General hopes that this political development will entail practical and serious steps leading to the announcement of a clear and specific national road map to complete all necessary procedures to complete the electoral process as the most important demand of the Libyan people, and he also appeals to all Libyan actors to support the current state of consensus in order to secure comprehensive national elections as soon as possible.

The spokesman expressed Abou Al-Gheit’s thanks and appreciation for the efforts of the Arab Republic of Egypt and its sponsorship of the meetings of the committees concerned with the Libyan constitutional process in Egypt over a year and a half, in the manner that enabled the preparation of this document and its referral to the two councils for approval in accordance with their respective systems.

The speaker reaffirmed the League of Arab States’ continuous support for every serious and fair endeavor aimed at reviving vitality and effectiveness in the political process in Libya, ending the long-running transitional stages in the country, establishing a permanent state of stability, and initiating the process of construction, reconstruction and development.

Richard Norland: Discussions of the Representatives and the Supreme State (leave no reason to postpone setting an early date for parliamentary and presidential elections in Libya)

Cairo- The US Ambassador to Libya, “Richard Norland,” confirmed that the discussions that took place between the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State, Thursday in Cairo, leave no reason to postpone setting an early date for parliamentary and presidential elections.

Norland said: “We share all Libyans’ desire to see Libyan leaders adopt the necessary measures as soon as possible to allow the High National Elections Commission to start activating the electoral process.”

The Speakers of the House of Representatives and the State Council confirmed their agreement to set a clear and specific road map to be announced later to complete all necessary procedures for the electoral process.

The United States strongly supports (Batili’s) calls for a national consensus in Libya on a clear timetable for elections

Washington- The United States of America announced its strong support for the calls of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Libya, “Abdullah Batili” for a national consensus in Libya on setting a clear timetable for elections.

“There is no other way to ensure long-term stability and peace,” the United States said in a statement posted by the embassy in Libya on its Twitter account.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya had renewed in a statement yesterday, Thursday, its explicit position that there is an urgent need for a national settlement to launch a clear path leading to the organization of elections in 2023, and the announcement of a new era for Libya, its neighbors and the region.

In its statement, the mission urged the House of Representatives and the State Council to expedite a full and final agreement, including on contentious issues, in order to complete the necessary steps to hold inclusive national elections within a specified time frame.

The mission reaffirmed that it is the duty of political leaders to show a real and continuous commitment for achieving a lasting peace, by building on the previous agreements of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, with the aim of resolving the political crisis by holding elections as soon as possible, stressing that it is important for the Libyan people who has the right to choose its leaders and restore legitimacy to state institutions without further delay.

The UN mission concluded its statement by saying that, consistent with its mandate, it will remain fully prepared to support sincere initiatives aimed at achieving a national consensus that paves the way for a Libyan-Libyan solution to the protracted political crisis.
