The European Union adopts a legal framework that allows the imposition of sanctions on election obstructionists in Libya.

BRUSSELS, The spokesman for the European Union for the Middle East and North Africa, “Luis Miguel Bueno”, renewed the union’s threat to impose sanctions on the election obstructionists in Libya.

Miguel said in televised statements today that the European Union has adopted a legal framework that allows imposing sanctions on persons and entities that obstruct or undermine the elections in Libya, referring to UN Security Council Resolution No. 2571 (2021), which supports this step.

The European Union spokesman for the Middle East and North Africa indicated that the Paris conference on Libya, which was held this month, showed that the priority at the present time is holding presidential and parliamentary elections within a schedule set by the electoral commission starting from December 24.

“We are ready to mobilize all our resources to accompany Libya through this complex process,” he continued, adding that the resolution of the Libyan conflict can only be political, through an inclusive process owned and led by Libyans, and restore Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
