Egypt and the United Nations agree to intensify joint action towards advancing the Libyan-Libyan political solution

Tripoli-Egypt and the United Nations agreed to intensify joint action towards advancing the Libyan-Libyan political solution in order to achieve security, stability and prosperity in Libya.

This came during an audience Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry gave in Cairo on Monday to Abdullah Batili, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

At the beginning of this meeting, the Egyptian Foreign Minister renewed his congratulations to the Special Representative on assuming his post on his first visit to Egypt, expressing Egypt’s full support for him for success of his mission to restore stability in Libya, highlighting the pivotal role of the United Nations and its neutrality, which makes it enjoy the confidence of the parties inside Libya and in the international community, according to a statement by the Spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published by the Ministry’s SMS page.

During the meeting, Shoukry presented the continuous efforts made and still sincerely exerted by Egypt to resolve the Libyan crisis, especially through its recent hosting of the rounds of the constitutional track between the two High Council of Representatives of State, pointing to the importance of completing this track and the need to hold presidential and legislative elections simultaneously in Libya in order to end the crisis, and achieve the aspirations of the brotherly Libyan people, with an emphasis on Libyan ownership of the solution and the importance of respecting the elected legislative institution.

Shoukry added that this also requires the implementation of UN and international decisions on the exit of all foreign forces, mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya within a specified time frame, stressing in this regard the importance of supporting the mission of the Joint Military Committee 5+5.

For his part, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations reviewed during the meeting the efforts and contacts he is making across Libya, and his keenness to speak and listen to all parties to resolve the crisis, expressing his full appreciation of the constructive and pivotal Egyptian role in Libya.
