Rome, (Lana) - The commander of Operation Irene, launched by the European Union to prevent weapons from reaching Libya, urged to train the Libyan Coast Guard, indicating that they need to be more independent to deal with security matters in their territorial waters.

In a press statement, Fabio Agostini stressed that this step is the best way to stop illegal immigration, as well as dismantle the networks that trade in people.

He said, "We are confident that the positive developments in Libya will allow us to achieve results even in this area."
